ALPHABUS "the First" of Lanaudière
Pilot Project
Gaudreault Transport
Objective of the project :
The main objective of the project is to put a brake on school dropping out and illiteracy by developing in young people an interest in quality literature and in the world of education.
Description of the project :
ALPHABUS is recycled school bus, especially fitted out as a computerized press room.
ALPHABUS drives around the roads of Lanaudière in order to reach thousands of children in quest of knowledge.
In 2003-2004, at the school boards of the region, about 38,765 pupils are registered at the preschool and primary levels, and 30,544 at the secondary.
ALPHABUS is collegially elaborated by educators, business people and specialists in community affairs, among others.
ALPHABUS can accommodate about 30 children, at the same time, with a whole range of enriching educational tools at their disposal. Our interactive workshops, supervised by qualified professionals, will increase tenfold their opportunities to learn and to cultivate their minds.
ALPHABUS moves from one municipality to another, staying there for a week. This pilot project takes place in Lanaudière, a region that is afflicted by a colossal number of dropouts and illiterates.
ALPHABUS visits libraries, schools, day camps, daycare centers, youth centers, community and cultural organizations.
And then there was ONE !
May 2nd 2004, a date to remember
ALPHABUS he 1st on public display for the first time !
Not complete yet, the inside still needs to be fitted out, however thanks to the generosity and work of the folks at Gaudreault Transport the ALPHABUS was displayed in its shining new colours at our Brunch “Bulles et Bus” at the Joliette Golf Club on May 2nd. To say that it attracted both attention and admiration would be an understatement and we have to confess that some of us shed a tear.
It’s been a long wait, and there is still plenty to do before we become operational but we are getting there and now that we have something physical to show (yes you can come and kick the tyres) it becomes much easier to promote the project, so watch for the ALPHABUS on display at a shopping centre/library/sporting event near you over the next couple of months and come and see what your Guild’s working for.
